An Interview with Alex R. Kahler

Hello and welcome to my second interview with an author! I sat down with Alex R. Kahler, author of the Runebinder Chronicles as well as the Pale Queen series and the Ravenborn duology (as A.R. Kahler) among several others, to chat books, movie adaptions and more.

For of all thank you for being here (metaphorically speaking)!

My pleasure! Thanks so much for reaching out!!

1. What was it that sparked your passion for writing or has it always been there?

I’ve always loved telling stories. Apparently I used to tell some really grim ones when I was like eight. Singing songs about drowning kids and th elike. So, I guess I’ve always wanted to write cheery stories like the apocalypse and Ragnarok and Good VS Evil. (I swear I’m not creepy in person.) Admittedly, Harry Potter really convinced me to become a writer. That series saved me by giving me a better world to inhabit. I hope to be able to do the same.

2. In three words what can we expect from RUNEBREAKER?

Anger. Revenge. Madness.

3. Do you picture certain actors for your characters when writing?

I’m wayyy off the pulse of pop culture. I don’t know actor names, so I don’t cast them. 😅

4. You recently announced film rights to the IMMORTAL CIRCUS series, what has that process been like?

It’s an interesting one, mainly because—like so much in entertainment—the actual deal was cut ages ago. We were only just able to announce recently. I try to forget it’s a thing; in Hollywood, a movie isn’t guaranteed until it’s on the screen, and we’re still in stage one of a thousand. But I won’t lie—I dream about that premiere quite often!

5. What is the best part of having your books out in the world for you?

Hearing from fans. Writing involves so much isolation and screen-staring and disappointment that it means the world to hear from those who read and love what you do. Especially since I try to write for under-represented readers, hearing that it helped them in some way means more than I can say.

6. Is there anything you can tell us about what’s next after the RUNEBINDER CHRONICLES?

I honestly haven’t the foggiest! Hopefully I’ll have something new in the works by then. I have a few ideas floating around but nothing that’s gelled. One involving magical drugs, one involving elemental aliens, and a few horror stories in the mix….

7. What is the main thing you want readers to take away from your books?

That anyone can be a hero. Anyone can have power. Anyone can save the world.

8. What does your writing space look like?

My laptop! I’ve literally moved every year for the last 16 years, often more than once a year. Heck, in the last two weeks I’ve called ‘home’ 4 different places (thanks Pele!) so I’ll take whatever space I can focus in for a few hours. Right now, it’s the lanai on an organic farm in Hawaii, and I don’t ever want to leave.

9. What has been your favourite read of 2018 so far?

I’ve been crap at reading this year. Too much moving around. But, to mention totally different ends of the spectrum, I am in love with MAGGIE AND ABBY’S NEVERENDING PILLOW FORT by Will Taylor and THE GLOAMING by Kirsty Logan. Taylor’s middle grade is a magical, light-hearted tale of friendship and adventure, while Logan’s contemp fantasy is a rich, dark saga filled with mermaids, queer love, and magically dangerous Scottish isles.

Huge thank you to Alex for agreeing to the interview. You can find my five star review of RUNEBINDER here.
