Waiting on Wednesday…The House in the Cerulean Sea

45046567The House in the Cerulean Sea

Publication Date: March 17th 2020

Publisher: Tor Books

Blurb: A magical island. A dangerous task. A burning secret.

Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages.

When Linus is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management he’s given a curious and highly classified assignment: travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six dangerous children reside: a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist. Linus must set aside his fears and determine whether or not they’re likely to bring about the end of days.

But the children aren’t the only secret the island keeps. Their caretaker is the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, who will do anything to keep his wards safe. As Arthur and Linus grow closer, long-held secrets are exposed, and Linus must make a choice: destroy a home or watch the world burn.

An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place—and realizing that family is yours.

Few authors are as capable as making me Feel Feelings™ as TJ Klune. His writing is phenomenal and so the excitement for The House in the Cerulean Sea cannot be contained. I expect tears! I expect laughter! I expect joy! I expect TJ to once again crush my heart in front of my eyes!

Also this will be TJ’s first book with Tor – so there are bonus excitement points to see one of my favourite authors with one of my favourite publishers. (Not to mention after the hell he’s been through with {redacted} – may they burn in the fiery pits of hell – it’s what he deserves!)

Also I am in fucking love with that cover 😍😍

Is House in the Cerulean Sea on your tbr? I highly recommend it and that you check out the rest of his books in the mean time (though make sure they’re published by BOATK Books or RR Bowker).

Waiting on Wednesday…Carved From Stone and Dream

43801242._SY475_Carved From Stone and Dream by T. Frohock

Publication Date: February 25th 2020

Publisher: Harper Voyager

Series: Los Nefilim

Blurb: February 1939

Catalonia has fallen. Los Nefilim is in retreat.

With the Nationalist forces hard on their heels, the members of Los Nefilim—Spanish Nephilim that possess the power to harness music and light in the supernatural war between the angels and daimons—make a desperate run for the French border.

Diago Alvarez, a singular being of angelic and daimonic descent, follows Guillermo and a small group of nefilim through the Pyrenees, where the ice is as treacherous as postwar loyalties—both can kill with a single slip. When a notebook of Los Nefilim’s undercover operatives falls into a traitor’s hands, Diago and Guillermo risk their lives to track it down. As they uncover a pocket realm deep within the Pyrenees, Diago discovers his family is held hostage.

Faced with an impossible choice: betray Los Nefilim, or watch his family die, Diago must nurture the daimonic song he has so long denied in order to save those he loves.

T. Frohock is my new favourite author! I only discovered her books this year but I am in love.

The Los Nefilim books are spell-binding and I cannot wait for Carved From Stone and Dream 😍 I would die for Diago, Miguel and Rafael not gonna lie!

If you aren’t familiar with these books I highly, highly recommend you pick them up. Find my ‘Five Reason to Read Los Nefilim’ post here and my five star review of Where Oblivion Lives here.

Waiting on Wednesday…Crier’s War

41951626._SY475_Crier’s War by Nina Varela

Publication Date: October 1st 2019

Publisher: HarperTeen

Series: Crier’s War #1

Blurb: After the War of Kinds ravaged the kingdom of Rabu, the Automae, designed to be the playthings of royals, usurped their owners’ estates and bent the human race to their will.

Now Ayla, a human servant rising in the ranks at the House of the Sovereign, dreams of avenging her family’s death…by killing the sovereign’s daughter, Lady Crier.

Crier was Made to be beautiful, flawless, and to carry on her father’s legacy. But that was before her betrothal to the enigmatic Scyre Kinok, before she discovered her father isn’t the benevolent king she once admired, and most importantly, before she met Ayla.

Now, with growing human unrest across the land, pressures from a foreign queen, and an evil new leader on the rise, Crier and Ayla find there may be only one path to love: war.

First off, before even getting to the content, can we take a minute for THAT COVER. Because it’s fucking stunning! I was always planning to read this, but that cover single-handedly ensured that I will be buying a physical copy, without a doubt. I really, really hope it’s as shiny as it looks.

And now to get to the content, it sounds like it’s going to be absolutely incredible. I am so excited for this. I also hear that there some intense slowburn which I am here for. Slowburn AND f/f AND enemies-to-lovers – need I say more?

Is Crier’s War on your tbr pile?

Waiting on Wednesday…Docile

40522814Docile by K.M. Szpara

Publication Date: March 3rd 2020

Publisher: Tor.com

Blurb: There is no consent under capitalism

Docile is a science fiction parable about love and sex, wealth and debt, abuse and power, a challenging tour de force that at turns seduces and startles.

To be a Docile is to be kept, body and soul, for the uses of the owner of your contract. To be a Docile is to forget, to disappear, to hide inside your body from the horrors of your service. To be a Docile is to sell yourself to pay your parents’ debts and buy your children’s future.

Elisha Wilder’s family has been ruined by debt, handed down to them from previous generations. His mother never recovered from the Dociline she took during her term as a Docile, so when Elisha decides to try and erase the family’s debt himself, he swears he will never take the drug that took his mother from him. Too bad his contract has been purchased by Alexander Bishop III, whose ultra-rich family is the brains (and money) behind Dociline and the entire Office of Debt Resolution. When Elisha refuses Dociline, Alex refuses to believe that his family’s crowning achievement could have any negative side effects—and is determined to turn Elisha into the perfect Docile without it.

The cover for Docile dropped Monday so I can finally publish a Waiting on Wednesday post of my single most anticipated book of 2020! Words cannot describe how excited I am for this book.

Tor.com Publishing has been teasing us for a goddamn week in the lead up to the reveal and it had me on tenterhooks. The cover didn’t disappoint, I love it so much.

I’ve loved the short stories Szpara has written so I cannot wait for a full length novel. Not to mention how enticing that blurb is. The early reviews are only increasing the anticipation. And that tagline? 🔥🔥 Bring on March 2020 for the love of god.

Waiting on Wednesday…The Impossible Contract

43263188The Impossible Contract by K.A. Doore

Publication Date: November 12th 2019

Publisher: Tor Books

Series: The Chronicles of Ghadid #2

Blurb: Thana has a huge reputation to live up to as daughter of the Serpent, who rules over Ghadid’s secret clan of assassins. Opportunity to prove herself arrives when Thana accepts her first contract on Heru, a dangerous foreign diplomat with the ability to bind a person’s soul under his control.

She may be in over her head, especially when Heru is targeted by a rival sorcerer who sends hordes of the undead to attack them both. When Heru flees, Thana has no choice than to pursue him across the sands to the Empire that intends to capture Ghadid inside its iron grip.

A stranger in a strange city, Thana’s only ally is Mo, a healer who may be too noble for her own good. Meanwhile, otherworldly and political dangers lurk around every corner, and even more sinister plans are uncovered which could lead to worldwide devastation. Can Thana rise to the challenge—even if it means facing off against an ancient evil?

I thoroughly enjoyed The Perfect Assassin so my excitement for The Impossible Contract is high! The fact that we don’t even have to wait a year for this just adds to it. We are going to be outside the boundary of Ghadid, following the daughter of the Serpent of Ghadid. And I mean, f/f assassins? Bring it on!

Have you read The Perfect Assassin? Excited for book two?
